The things I hate about Johnny Marr are…

  1. He says things like: “As for the 80’s shredders, they were a joke. That’s guitar playing as an Olympic sport. If you’re into decent music, it’s just offensive.” (Guitarist magazine, Sept 2009).
  2. He writes some catchy shit that you need to hum, even though you hate him – my favourite one to hate being “What difference does it make” which I still dont’ know how to play.
  3. His hair.
  4. …that he’s successful. Smug git.

Re: number 1, this kind of blanket statement ‘offends’ a fair bunch of the guitar fraternity. I’m sure Marr doesn’t care anyway (another reason to hate him) since he always goes on about ‘serving the song’ etc. Yes – true, serve the song, but don’t bitch about people who are more technically capable than you because you can’t do it yourself (and ‘no’, you can’t). Just because someone has skill doesn’t mean their playing can’t also serve a song and take the melody someplace. If shred is guitar playing as an Olympic sport, then cardigan wearing student skill-level jangly pop riffs are the Paralympics version.

Sneak preview of next month’s “The things I hate about Graham Coxon are…”:

  1. …that he’s successful. Smug git.
  2. His ‘solo’ on “House in the country” – if you’re into decent music, it’s just offensive.
  3. He idolizes Johnny Marr.
  4. His hair.

  1. […] was thinking ‘Jeez – whoever that guitarist is has produced a solo nearly as bad as that one by Graham Coxon’ in that it sounds like someone who has only been playing the guitar for about 5 minutes and […]
